Local dishes are not only tasty but also healthy as they are based on the Mediterranean diet famous for cooking with olive oil. Barbecued pork, juicy lamb stew, marinated chicken, freshly caught fish, seasonal fruit and vegetables, wild greens from the mountains, halloumi cheese and natural herbs & spices all providing a unique aroma which will have you drooling for a plate!

The island's geographical position and history has resulted in a very interesting merge of Greek, Turkish, Arabic and English culinary influences. Supporting this, "meze", meaning mixture, is served in most Cypriot taverns and consists of numerous little dishes with a slight taste of everything.

In shops, taverns, cafes and bars the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. So, when approached by a Cypriot, do not hesitate to accept a warm welcoming handshake! Equally, you may find yourself invited to a game of tavli (Backgammon) by the locals who play for hours in the sunshine at tables outside the bars and restaurants in almost every town and village on the island. Cypriots are hospitable people living in a tiny paradise where human virtues like warmth, integrity and friendship are still a way of life.
